Gozo: year-round holiday idyll
Gozo is a tiny island, with a long and colourful history. The oldest buildings in the world can be found here, at Ggantija, near the village of Xaghra – older than the pyramids and Stonehenge! Some of the ancient qualities of life still persist here. The land is still largely lovingly tended by hand. The fishermen still
put to sea in the traditional painted luzzus – many still from Marsalforn itself.
Marsalforn, situated on the north coast, was a traditional fishing village with its own tiny harbour, boat houses and, originally, just cottages. Over the subsequent years some of the local population discovered the joys of owning a summer house in the village and decamped here during the hot summer months. Then, in the latter part of the last century, foreigners, in particular the British and visitors from the main island, Malta, found it a great place to stay, too.
Some stayed permanently and thus Marsalforn today, as well as being a resort for holiday makers, is also a great place for people to relocate if they want a permanent change of
life style – for the better!
The island, just 20 minutes away by ferry, is a world apart from the hustle and bustle of Malta. But it is not just about peace and tranquillity.
Gozo is full of shops, restaurants and all the amenities of a modern society (with even its own hospital). The summer resounds to the joys of the village festas. The other months see the advent of operas, shows and other events. There is always something to do! Gozo enjoys a benign climate the year round. People enjoy walking, enjoying the green countryside in the winter months – which, for those from northern climes is surprising because it is full of flowers. In the summer,
the sun shines hot but the sea is never far way to cool off – just a stone’s throw, in fact, from the new Vista Point… |
